Mom as a Spirit Guide
Inviting Mom’s Spirit In & Making Time for Your Practice
My mother’s 79th birthday would have been this month. That combined with all of Cancer’s Mother archetype energy had me missing her guidance and presence more than usual. I realized that I had not really felt her presence since we moved into our new house. I always felt her at the last house, especially because she spent her last night with us there before I took her to the hospital the next day for surgery, which she never came home from.
While driving to run some errands, I had an overwhelming wave of grief around her not being able to see our new home and enjoy her first great-grandchild due in January. Even though my spiritual practices have been brief and sporadic due to all the things going on, I didn’t know why I felt so disconnected from her since moving. Arriving at the post office, I asked the clerk for stamps and when she asked if I had a preference for what was on them, I said, no. She then handed me a book of stamps with hummingbirds on it. My mom loved hummingbirds and yellow roses, so at that moment I knew she was reaching out to me in direct response to me wanting to feel her. I instinctively felt then that I needed to actually invite her spirit into our new house, re-commit to a deeper spiritual practice and establish a new connection to her. I immediately went home, made some sugar water and then hung up our hummingbird feeder. Within a few days, I started having regular visitors who I can see from my kitchen window. They always make me think of her.
Last week, I celebrated mom’s birthday with yellow roses on an ancestor's altar I made just for her birthday and included pictures of her, my grandmother and great-grandmother. I spent time talking to her by writing in an old journal of hers which she had only put a few entries in. It’s one of the ways I talk to her now, and I have not done it since we moved. That morning, a doe was in our backyard very close to the patio. Deer have always been my mom’s spirit animal to me, so again I knew it was another message from her. When I opened the door, she only looked at me and continued eating some leaves before slowly making her way back to the fence to leave. I now feel Mom’s spirit is all around our home.
From this I re-learned that I needed to take the time to invite her spirit in and to spend time being receptive to that spirit for me to reconnect with her. This was a good reminder that you have to make time for your spiritual practices and allow yourself to be open to receiving messages from god, cosmos, spirit or whatever you prefer to call it, for a two-way connection to be made. A valuable lesson for me that reminded me just how important making time for my spiritual practices is.
How do you stay open to this connection?
